Cannabis Law

In 2017 Lesotho became the first African country to legalise cannabis for medical purposes. Medical cannabis is regulated in terms of the Drugs of Abuse Act of 2008 and the regulations published thereunder namely the Drugs of Abuse (Cannabis) Regulations of 2018.

 

Albertus Kleingeld and Zurayda Mayet’s have played advisory roles in this regard. They have advised more than 26 multi-national companies on Cannabis Law, the regulatory framework, and the commercial application thereof.  As one of the founding members of the Phekoana Cannabis Association of Lesotho, all the initial meetings of the Association were chaired by Albertus and Zurayda. 

Kleingeld Mayet has had the privilege of being involved in the following transactions:  

  • Bophelo Bio Science & Wellness pertaining to the Halo Acquisition 
  • Advising Aphria: Medical Marijuana & Cannabis Oil Canada  in relation to the cannabis regulatory framework in Lesotho
  • Advising the Pension Fund of Lesotho through Mergence Investment Managers with regards to Medigrow/ MG Health 
  • Advising Verve Dynamics in obtaining regulatory approval 
  • Advising Maluti Green-Med pertaining to debt and equity financing 
  • Advising Hempvest Africa with regards to equity funding and corporate finance
